As a personal trainer, one of the most common challenges I see in clients is feeling overwhelmed about trying to work out. Whether it's due to past negative experiences, a lack of motivation, or just the belief that exercise isn't their thing, starting and sticking to a fitness routine can be a daunting task.

If you're feeling this way, know that you're not alone. Many people struggle to get started and stick with their workouts, but there are practical steps you can take to make the process less frightening and more enjoyable.

I see the common trend of busy professionals who always put work and family first. Trying various workouts to try and match the schedule, but nothing seems to Eventually, the gym becomes intimidating and there is a total lack of motivation to work out on solo. If you are feeling similar, here are some action steps you can take to overcome your fears and start your fitness journey:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: One of the most important things you can do when starting a fitness routine is to set realistic goals. Sitting down and talk about what you actually want to achieve. Set goals that are challenging but achievable, that help you stay motivated and feel a sense of accomplishment when you’ve achieved them.

  2. Find Your Motivation: Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to work out. For some, it's to lose weight, while for others, it's to improve their overall health or build strength. And others still, for bragging rights when challenging your kids in backyard spike ball. Whatever your motivation is, it's essential to find something that drives you to stay committed to your fitness routine.

  3. Start Small: One of the most significant mistakes people make when starting a fitness routine is trying to do too much too soon. This can lead to burnout and make it more challenging to stick with your workouts in the long run. Instead, start small and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts. As an example, you can start with short, 20-minute workouts that can could be done from home. Build your confidence and strength, then gradually increas the duration and intensity of her workouts.

  4. Find a Workout You Enjoy: If you hate the workout you're doing, it's going to be tough to stick with it. That's why it's essential to find a workout that you enjoy. Whether it's dancing, swimming, or weight lifting, find something that makes you feel good and that you look forward to doing. Strength training is still the number one avenue to long term goals, BUT finding consistency in movement FIRST, is paramount.

  5. Make it a Habit: One of the most significant obstacles to starting a fitness routine is finding the time to do it. To overcome this, it's essential to make working out a habit. Set a specific time and day to work out each week, and stick to it, no matter what. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare, try to fit in a quick workout. Starting by scheduling workouts on your calendar, and eventually, it becomes a non-negotiable part of your routine.

  6. Find Support: Starting a fitness routine can be challenging, but having support can make all the difference. Whether it's a workout buddy, a personal trainer, or an online community, find people who can help motivate and encourage you along the way. For our clients, the accountability of showing up somewhere to a specific time, after investing their own money and mental energy into it, is key in making it stick.
